Melasma is a troublesome hyperpigmentation disorder, hormonally dependent and commonly affecting females during pregnancy (the “mask of pregnancy”) and with the use of birth control pills.
It is one of the most difficult conditions to treat, and may be both superficial (epidermal) or deep (dermal). Melasma can become worse with sunlight.
Treatment options include various topical agents including stringent sunscreen (higher than SPF 30), 4% hydroquinone (Skin Tx program) and exfoliants.
Lasers such as the Q-Switched YAG laser, the Fraxel laser and the Excel V (Laser Genesis) are other possible options, however, the success rate varies and is unpredictable.
Unfortunately, even if a favourable response is obtained, recurrences are common.
