Volume Loss

Volume loss, in the context of aging skin, refers to the decrease in the underlying structures of the skin, particularly collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, and fat. As we age, the production of these key elements decreases, leading to a reduction in skin plumpness and firmness. This loss manifests as sagging skin (or skin laxity), hollowed cheeks, deepened nasolabial folds (the lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth), and sunken eyes. Additionally, bone loss around the jaws and cheeks can further exacerbate this appearance. Overall, volume loss contributes significantly to an aged appearance, making it a primary concern for many seeking anti-aging treatments.

OUR APPROACH TO TREATING VOLUME LOSS

At Arbutus Laser we can treat volume loss non-surgically with injectable dermal fillers, like hyaluronic acid (e.g., Juvederm, Restylane), calcium hydroxylapatite (e.g., Radiesse), and poly-L-lactic acid (e.g., Sculptra), which are among the most common treatments. They work by replenishing lost volume and stimulating collagen production. Results can be immediate (or take a few weeks, depending on the product) and can last several months to years. An initial consultation is required and treatment can take place at the same visit.

There are a variety of areas on the face and body that fillers can help improve.

Some of these areas on the face include:
*Temples for hollowness
*Tear troughs (under eyes) for hollowness
*Cheeks for volume loss
*Lips for volume loss
*Upper lip to fill vertical lip lines
*Nasal labial folds (smile lines) to fill lines
*Jaws for definition
*Marionette folds to fill lines
*Chin for volume and definition

Some of the areas on the body include:
*Neck for skin rejuvenation
*Decollete (chest) for skin rejuvenation
*Hands for volume loss

What You Can Expect:

With a variety of injectable agents available, we will discuss the best options that will most likely achieve your desired results. Each has its unique properties and advantages.

Each patient is treated individually based on their desires, needs and what their end goal is. Our physicians take these points into consideration when choosing the product used, area treated and frequency of treatments.

Filler treatments for volume loss can range in cost and are dependent on the amount of product needed to reach the desired goal. A vial of filler ranges from $750-$1000 based on the product..

Lines & Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are hallmark signs of aging skin, arising from both intrinsic factors (ie. genetic predisposition) and extrinsic factors (ie. sun exposure, lifestyle, occupation). Fine lines are often the initial indicators of aging. They present as shallow lines that frequently emerge in areas around the eyes (“crow’s feet”) and around the mouth from smiling (this is not a bad thing!) and on the forehead due to repeated facial expressions.

As the skin’s elasticity and collagen diminish, these fine lines can deepen into wrinkles. Wrinkles are pronounced folds or creases that can be influenced by repeated facial movements, but also by prolonged sun exposure, lifestyle, and genetic factors.

OUR APPROACH TO TREATING LINES AND WRINKLES

A variety of treatment options exist for wrinkles and folds. These options are discussed during consultation to determine the priority bothersome lines and ideal choice of treatment.

Treatment options range from injectable fillers or neuromodulators to procedures such as fractionated laser, RF Microneedling and/or skin tightening devices.

Fillers have a more immediate result, whereas laser treatments tend to show gradual improvement over time.

Fine lines and wrinkles can be slowed and even prevented with regular maintenance treatments of either injectables or devices. Talk to us to learn more about slowing and prevention.

What You Can Expect:

Each patient is treated individually based on their needs and priorities. With a variety of options available, we will discuss our approach and make recommendations to best achieve your desired results.

To yield the best results for mature lines and wrinkles, we typically recommend a combination of treatments. This will often include a recommendation of injectables and laser treatments over a period of time.

Treating lines and wrinkles range widely in cost and are dependent on the treatment options. More information on pricing will be discussed during the consultation.

Lifting & Tightening

When we look at lifting and tightening the skin, we are addressing skin laxity. Skin laxity, also known as skin looseness or sagging skin, refers to the loss of elasticity and firmness in the skin. This occurs as a natural part of the aging process, but factors such as sun exposure, genetics, weight fluctuations, and lifestyle choices will also influence laxity.

As we age, the production of collagen and elastin decreases resulting in the skin losing its ability to bounce back and conform to the underlying issues. Consequently, wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging become more apparent, particularly in areas like the face, neck, arms, abdomen, and knees.

Arbutus Laser has been addressing skin laxity on the face and body since 2003 with a variety of devices and injectables. These interventions have helped to restore a more lifted appearance while tightening the skin texture.

OUR APPROACH TO TREATING LIFTING AND TIGHTENING

A few treatment options are available for skin laxity. Different lines and laxity are treated in different ways. During consultation, an assessment of the areas of laxity are identified to determine the best treatment options.

Skin tightening devices such as Thermage® or Ultherapy® can be used to help to lift the eyelids, eyebrows, jowls, chin, neck, abdomen, knees, arms, and thighs. Other treatment devices include radio frequency microneedling, laser genesis, and pico toning.

Injectable fillers can also be used to improve the appearance of skin laxity related to volume loss. Results with dermal fillers may be seen in one treatment session.

ALC TIP: The secret to lifting and tightening is to continue regular maintenance treatments annually or biennially (2 years) to battle time and gravity.

Tone and Texture

Skin tone and texture issues refer to irregularities and imperfections on the skin’s surface as well as unevenness in the skin’s colouration. These issues can be a result of various factors, including aging, sun damage, genetics, and skin conditions.

Skin tone issues can include dullness (a lack of radiance or brightness), hyperpigmentation (dark patches or sunspots), hypopigmentation (light patches), and skin redness.

Skin texture issues can include dryness, build up of dead skin cells, enlarged pores, scarring, uneven texture or flaky skin.

OUR APPROACH TO TREATING SKIN TONE AND TEXTURE

Treating skin tone and texture varies based on individual concern, needs and skin type. During consultation, an assessment is performed to identify the skin type and address the skin concern to determine the best treatment option.

From hydrafacials to skin resurfacing treatments, we offer a multitude of devices and medical grade skin care to help improve tone and texture. We also offer filler micro droplets to help bring radiance, hydration and luminosity to the skin.

Sun Damage

Sun-damaged skin refers to changes or damages to the skin caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, primarily from the sun, but also from artificial sources like tanning beds. Sun damage is cumulative, which means that repeated, unprotected exposure, even for short periods, can lead to noticeable changes over time. It can appear as redness, pigmentation and uneven skin tone and texture.

OUR APPROACH TO TREATING SUN DAMAGE

Treating sun damage varies based on individual concern, the type of damage and skin type. During consultation, an assessment is performed to identify the severity of sun damage and determine the best treatment option.

From individual sun damaged spots to full face or body sun damage, we offer a multitude of devices and medical grade skin care to help improve your skin. Our choices for devices include IPL, Fraxel®, VBeam®, Pico, and/or Clear + Brilliant®.

What You Can Expect:

During the consultation, your skin will be assessed. Ideally, the skin should be fair and untanned for treatment. This includes exposure to self tanners, spray tan and tanning beds.

First thing’s first, discussion on sun exposure and prevention will be necessary to ensure your future investments in lasers and medical skin care products are prolonged.

Multiple treatment sessions are most likely needed (often a treatment series of 3-6) and we usually treat sun damaged skin during the fall and winter months when the days are shorter and there is less sun.

It is important to keep the area covered when outdoors for at least the first 10 days after treatment (and ideally ongoing) and to always use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) in the future.

Cost of laser treatments for sun damage start at $450 per session.
