Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution into the veins which cause irritation of their inner walls resulting in collapse closure of these veins. The majority of varicose veins can be treated by sclerotherapy. The two main superficial veins, called the great and small saphenous veins, can be treated with EVLT(TM). Sclerotherapy does not require loss of time from work or other activities. Modern lasers work well for facial veins but have inconsistent results for small leg veins.
Sclerotherapy usually requires several treatment sessions. Ironically, complex webs of small spider veins will often require more visits than larger varicosities. Most patients find the injections minimally uncomfortable – like a pin prick. Bruising is normal and will generally fade in 3-5 days. Moderate exercise is encouraged following treatment.
When a larger vein is injected, compression stockings must be worn up to 10 days. For spider veins, the leg is wrapped in compression for 1-3 days.
