Laser resurfacing can be divided into 2 categories: Ablative and non-ablative.
Ablative resurfacing with the CO2 and Erbium lasers refers to the ablation, or removal of skin surface. Ablative resurfacing is typically used to treat deeper lines and wrinkles in our clinic. These treatments are very aggressive and have significant down-time (up to 2 weeks). Patients are expected to follow a strict home care regime for optimal healing and recovery.
Non-ablative resurfacing, typically with fractional lasers, refers to delivering heat into the skin through thousands of tiny, deep columns known as microthermal zones. Heat is also delivered by the laser and this will promote collagen production, leading to younger, tighter and healthier looking skin. Non-ablative resurfacing also improves the appearance of wrinkles, sun damage and minor scars. As the skin is still intact with fractional laser treatments, the skin heals much faster and the time of recovery and complications are minimized. Multiple treatments may be necessary.
