At Arbutus Laser Centre, our intimate health department focuses on pelvic floor strengthening and urinary incontinence. Weakening of the pelvic floor muscles typically occur from childbirth, age, obesity, chronic constipation and weight lifting. As a result of a weakened pelvic floor, some of us may face some urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence is the inability to control the release of urine from the bladder. Leakage of urine, of any amount, is NOT the ideal standard of health!
Pelvic Floor Strengthening
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissues located at the base of the pelvis. It supports organs in the lower abdomen such as the bladder, uterus (in women), and rectum. These muscles play a crucial role in various bodily functions, including:
1) urinary continence (controlling the release of urine from the bladder). Weakened pelvic floor muscles can lead to stress incontinence, where urine is involuntarily released when pressure is exerted on the bladder.
2) Bowel Function (essential for maintaining control over bowel movements).
3) Sexual satisfaction and functioning.
4) Support of Organs (support for the bladder, uterus, and rectum).

Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is a medical condition characterized by the inability to control the release of urine from the bladder, resulting in leakage. This condition ranges in severity from occasional, minor leaks to more frequent and substantial urine loss. There are several types of urinary incontinence: Stress Incontinence, Urge Incontinence, Overflow Incontinence and Mixed Incontinence. Leakage of any kind of urine is not normal. It is more common in women than men and tends to worsen with age.
